 Why These Small Groups Started

Over the years, I have noticed that more and more Year 11 students need extra support when preparing for their exams. Schools are under significant pressure to fit the entire curriculum into limited lesson time, and sometimes this simply isn’t enough. Many students report feeling rushed through topics at a pace that doesn’t suit them, and unfortunately, some do not have a specialist maths teacher in Year 11.

My waiting list for one-to-one tutoring has continued to grow, and I simply don’t have enough slots to meet the demand. As the waiting list increased, I wanted to find a way to support more students without compromising the quality of teaching.

That’s how the small groups began, and I have been incredibly pleased with how successful they have been. Depending on the student, many benefit greatly from working alongside others. Not all pupils feel comfortable with a one-to-one dynamic and can feel additional pressure in that setting. These sessions are relaxed in style and feel very different from school, while still maintaining high standards and a strong focus on achieving the best possible outcomes. The environment is engaging, supportive, and welcoming.

Why Small Groups Are So Effective

  • Maximum of six students: small enough for focused support, no one gets left behind.
  • Completely different from school teaching: Not a one size fits all model, I go at the pace that suits my students.
  • Purposeful lessons: each student is encouraged to push themselves and we address misconceptions together.
  • Targeted topics: areas where students are struggling are carefully selected, addressing challenges they encounter at school.
  • Past paper practice: expert guidance through exam-style questions building confidence for GCSEs.
